What you need
Most visitors can drive on a valid international driving permit alongside their home licence; GCC residents can use their national licence. Drivers usually need to be at least 21–25 depending on the vehicle class, with a credit card for the deposit.
Driving in Dubai
Roads are modern and well signposted, and Salik (electronic toll gates) is billed automatically — check how your rental handles toll charges. Fuel is inexpensive by international standards. Parking in Downtown and the Marina is paid and busy.
Choosing a car
A compact or mid-size car is fine for the city. For trips to Hatta or the dunes, a 4x4 gives more flexibility. Luxury and sports cars are widely available if you want to drive something special along Sheikh Zayed Road.
